Capital Public Radio: UC Students Protest Higher Ed Cuts

University of California students rallied at the Capitol Monday, protesting Governor Jerry Brown's proposed half-a-billion dollar cut to the UC system. Students chanting: "Whatcha doing, Jerry Brown, why're you trying to shut us down?" Hundreds of students chanted, marched and even danced in a flash mob to 70s music. Assemblymember Block Highlights Bill to Help Families by Closing Cayman Island Loopholes

SACRAMENTO – In this Democratic weekly address, Assemblymember Marty Block (D-San Diego) reports that his Cayman Islands Tax Loophole Bill has been passed by the Assembly. Block discusses how the bill will close off-shore tax shelters to generate revenue to directly pay for a tax cut on textbooks and supplies for college students.

Assemblymember Block Wants Community Colleges to Offer Bachelor's Degrees

(Sacramento) - State legislators recently held a hearing in Sacramento on California’s Master Plan for Higher Education. They were looking for new ideas on how to help more students get through college faster. One new idea that was discussed came from Assemblymember Marty Block (78th District, San Diego): allow community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees. KPCC’s Julie Small filed this report for Southern California Public Radio.
