Block: California back on the right track

SACRAMENTO—State Senator Marty Block (D-San Diego) released the following statement today on the Governor’s 2013-14 budget:

“For the first time in many years, California students will see increases instead of decreases in school, college and university funding. We have more work ahead of us before California classrooms are made whole, but the Governor’s budget plan offers a substantial down payment on what our students are owed and what the voters wanted to make right by approving Proposition 30.”

Seniors Give Block 100 Percent Rating

Block earns perfect score for second consecutive year

SACRAMENTO - The Congress of California Seniors (CCS) recently listed Assemblyman Marty Block (AD-78) with a 100 percent voting record on their 2012 California Legislative Report Card. In 2011, Block also earned a perfect rating.
“I’m proud to stand with California seniors to fight for the important pocketbook and quality of life legislation that makes a difference to them,” Block said.

Sacramento — Caleb Peltier may still be small, but he could make a big difference in many lives.

Caleb’s story has sparked legislation that would require hospitals to gradually start performing a $3 screening for congenital heart diseases on newborn babies.

Assemblyman Marty Block: Legislature should require simple, life-saving heart screening for infants

Caleb Peltier is a fighter. At 3 days old and at home, he began to have breathing problems, and his worried parents sought medical care. After being rushed to the emergency room, he was first misdiagnosed as having meningitis. Fortunately, a pediatric cardiologist was also on call in the emergency room. The cardiologist diagnosed heart disease, and Caleb was taken by aircraft from Vista in northern San Diego County to Children's Hospital in San Diego. Caleb's organs were shutting down, and he was in a battle for his life.

Last week, the Senate Education Committee approved three bills authored by Assembly Higher Education Chair Marty Block (AD-78) aimed at improving the student experience at California’s public colleges and universities. This series of bills includes AB 620 aimed at creating safe college campus environments for LGBT students,AB 670 to establish clear appeals procedures for California State University (CSU) admissions decisions, and AB 743that creates a system-wide assessment tool to better place community college students.

In fact, the power is rooted in ancient law and exists in most civilized nations today. The concept stems from the thought that there needs to be mercy injected in the system of punishment or an opportunity to mitigate a punishment, and also the recognition that the criminal justice system can be imperfect.
