Senator Atkins Applauds Governor’s Approval of Bills to Help Women, Children and Families

October 12, 2017

Sen. Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) reacted with the following statement regarding Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing of a package of bills that fulfills some of the top priorities of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus.

“It’s almost on a daily basis that the Governor and members of the Legislature must reassure various groups of Californians that we have their back. That is the reality of life under the current federal administration and U.S. Congress. Today, with Governor Brown’s signature on a package of bills, we are reminding Californians that we are continuing to fight for women and for our families.

“Already this year, we increased funding for child care and public education and expanded access to women’s healthcare. Today, we are further expanding access to child care and parental leave. We’re taking steps to make sure women are paid fairly, to increase testing for breast and ovarian cancer and to ensure that victims of sexual assault know their rights. We’re providing struggling moms with diapers and girls from struggling families with tampons at school. And we’re strengthening the safety net for women and families who’ve suffered domestic violence.

“As a proud co-author of many of these measures, I thank my colleagues in the Legislative Women’s Caucus for their leadership, and I thank Governor Brown for his support.”
