Senate Democratic Caucus Designates Next President pro Tempore

SACRAMENTO – On Tuesday, the Senate Democratic Caucus voted unanimously to select Senator Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) the next President pro Tempore of the California State Senate, succeeding Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles). President pro Tempore-designee Atkins will be formally elected on the Senate floor and take office on March 21st, 2018.

Senate President pro Tempore de León released the following statement on today’s vote:

"Today, the Senate Democratic Caucus officially voted to select our friend and colleague Senator Toni G. Atkins of San Diego as our next Senate President pro Tempore, effective March 21.  This collegial transition is in keeping with our Senate’s recent and important tradition of unity and cooperation.  She’s a person of vast experience and unimpeachable integrity. I’m particularly proud that our Senate will be led by a female and openly LGBQT leader.    

“For me, it has been the honor of a lifetime to lead a unified, progressive and collaborative California State Senate.  Together, we have accomplished historic achievements for millions of Californians.  As always, I thank the members of the Senate for their confidence, camaraderie and unwavering commitment to the future of this state.  And I am excited about working with Pro Tem-designate Atkins to ensure another year of extraordinary progress.”

Senator Atkins released the following statement:
