Senate Leader Atkins Reacts to Judge’s Ruling on End of Life Options Act

May 16, 2018

SACRAMENTO – Senate Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today reacted with the following statement to Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia’s decision to overturn California’s End of Life Option Act:

“I am incredibly disappointed in the judge’s ruling, but hopeful that the Attorney General will be successful in appealing a decision that, quite frankly, doesn’t make a lot of sense. My concern today is that Californians and their families who are currently engaged in the difficult end-of-life process under the law now must also cope with uncertainty. The law is in place at least until May 21. If the appeal is granted, my hope is that the appellate court will stay the judge’s decision and that terminally ill people who have made the difficult decision to end their lives in peace and on their own terms can move forward without unnecessary pain and suffering.”
