Legislature should require simple, life-saving heart screening for infants

Caleb Peltier is a fighter. At 3 days old and at home, he began to have breathing problems, and his worried parents sought medical care. After being rushed to the emergency room, he was first misdiagnosed as having meningitis. Fortunately, a pediatric cardiologist was also on call in the emergency room. The cardiologist diagnosed heart disease, and Caleb was taken by aircraft from Vista in northern San Diego County to Children's Hospital in San Diego. Caleb's organs were shutting down, and he was in a battle for his life.

In late October, distraught parents and students joined educators from local community colleges and high schools and faculty from San Diego State University (SDSU) at a special hearing called by Assemblymember Marty Block who chairs the Assembly Select Committee on K-16 Articulation, Access and Affordability. The Assemblymember heard concerns from members of the community on the recent decision by SDSU President Stephen L. Weber to end the admissions guarantee for local students who meet California State University eligibility requirements.

Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez, a Democrat, was elected in November 2008 to represent the 80th Assembly District.

Born in Indio and raised in Coachella and Imperial County, Pérez attended public schools and graduated from University of California, Riverside. He was a teacher before earning his master's degree in Education from Harvard University.

Pérez served on the Coachella Valley Unified School District Board and worked as a community health care director.
