Senator Atkins Praises Expansion of state Earned Income Tax Credit

July 6, 2017

Senator Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today lauded the Senate’s passage of SB 106, a budget trailer bill that includes an expansion of California’s Earned Income Tax Credit:

“Having championed the creation of a state-level Earned Income Tax Credit as Speaker of the Assembly, I am thrilled to see it being expanded. In its first year, more than 385,000 Californians on average received refunds of roughly $500. That is a significant benefit for struggling families – to be used to make better-quality meals, or buy new clothes for the kids, or to make necessary car repairs. Now that we’re expanding the credit to self-employed individuals and raising the eligibility limit dramatically from an income of about $14,000 to about $22,000, we can help a million more people, as well as spur economic activity in communities throughout our state. This is a good day for California.”
