Senator Atkins Reacts to Governor’s Proposed State Budget

January 10, 2018

Sen. Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement regarding the release of Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed state budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year:

“The good news is that California’s economy continues to be strong, and a $6.1-billion surplus will allow us to once again budget responsibly and provide for our residents. I have always appreciated Governor Brown’s prudence in preparing for the next economic downturn, and we will again add significantly to our Rainy Day Fund and overall reserves. Our budget will also allow us to continue to invest in programs that provide opportunities for Californians to succeed.

“This budget expands funding for our public schools; focuses on workforce education through our community colleges; maintains support for business attraction, retention, and growth through the California Competes Tax Credit; increases funding for wildfire protection; and invests in our infrastructure.

“Governor Brown has given us a great head start into our budget hearings and negotiations. I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues, the Assembly, and the Governor to improve quality of life for all Californians.”
