Statement on the Senate’s 2018-19 Budget Proposal

May 22, 2018

SACRAMENTO – California Senate Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and Senate Budget & Fiscal Review Committee Chair, Senator Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles), issued the following statement in response to the Budget Committee’s approval of the Senate’s proposed 2018-19 budget:

“California’s fiscal outlook is the strongest it’s been in a generation. This year, the California Senate will continue our momentum, building on Governor Brown’s commitment to expanding the Rainy Day Fund and maintaining robust financial reserves while also making the budget more equitable, with smart investments in children’s well-being, college accessibility and homelessness solutions.

“The Senate’s proposed budget balances fiscal responsibility with social responsibility. It is progressive without being profligate. It also shows that we’ve learned from the mistakes of the past. We have the rare opportunity to revitalize long-neglected programs for those who need them most, while ensuring that California is financially prepared to weather future economic downturns.

“We look forward to working with the Governor and our Assembly colleagues to craft the strongest budget possible for the people of California.”
