Senator Bill Monning Appointed to the California Air Resources Board

January 18, 2019

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tem Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) announced the appointment of Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) to the California Air Resources Board (ARB).

“As Chair of the Senate Rules Committee, I was proud to recommend the appointment of Senator Bill Monning to the ARB,” said Senator Atkins. “Bill has worked with communities around the state that are significantly impacted and vulnerable to pollution for years. His strong voice will affect these important policy discussions in critical areas.”

The ARB is responsible for coordinating, encouraging and reviewing efforts at all levels of government as they effect air quality.

“The importance of the ARB cannot be overstated,” said Senator Monning. “If we are to fight climate change, California needs to continue as a leader in addressing air pollution and greenhouse gas reduction. I want to thank the Senate for its trust in me to represent the house’s best interest in this important endeavor.”

Senator Monning’s accomplishments protecting the environment are significant. These include:

  • Holding perpetrators of environmental crimes accountable for dumping waste or hazardous substances and other environmental crimes.
  • Empowering the Department of Pesticide Regulation to better ensure that harmful pesticides stay out of California’s groundwater.
  • Calling on the federal Environmental Protection Agency to disclose certain pesticide ingredients.
  • Protecting vital ecosystems by granting public land parcels in the cities of Santa Cruz and Long Beach.
  • Establishing the California Sea Otter Fund to support research to protect the endangered species.
  • Developing criteria to certify local, sustainable California seafood.

The vacancy occurred because Senator Ricardo Lara took his place as California’s Insurance Commissioner.

The position does not receive compensation.
