Senate Leader Atkins Commends Governor Newsom for Action on Affordable Housing

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement commending Governor Newsom’s legal action against the City of Huntington Beach.

“Governor Newsom’s announcement today that he will pursue legal action against the City of Huntington Beach for their refusal to comply with state housing law marks a new chapter for housing in California. For too long, cities that refuse to plan for adequate new housing have flouted their legal and ethical obligations, directly contributing to the housing affordability and homelessness crisis that we now have statewide. While we acknowledge the importance of community input in planning decisions and want to provide adequate state support for those communities looking to meet their housing targets, we need to hold bad actors accountable.”
