SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) today issued the following statement in reaction to the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s announcement of Senate Bill 2 funding to address homelessness:

“Housing affordability is California’s gravest challenge – and homelessness is a humanitarian crisis, in cities and towns across our state. This $29.8 million, combined with the $53.3 million that was previously awarded, will give a significant boost to our communities’ efforts to help people who are experiencing homelessness find housing, and help keep those at risk of becoming homeless in their homes.”

Under SB 2, authored by Senate Leader Atkins and signed into law in 2017, revenue collected in 2018 was split between addressing homelessness and updating community plans. In 2019 and beyond, the revenue will be used to create affordable housing.
