Senate Leader Atkins’ Statement on Appointment of New CSU Chancellor

September 23, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement about the California State University Board of Trustees’ appointment of Dr. Joseph I. Castro to serve as CSU Chancellor:

“I am delighted that the California State University Trustees have chosen President Joseph I. Castro of CSU Fresno to serve as the system’s next Chancellor. Throughout his impressive career, Dr. Castro has proven to be a strong champion of our public universities and their missions. The first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Castro is committed to helping students open doors that transform their lives and to ensuring our CSU campuses remain such a powerful source of academic opportunity and social mobility in our state. As both Speaker of the Assembly and President pro Tem of the Senate, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Chancellor Tim White, and have enormous respect not only for his ability, and his affability, but also for his absolute commitment to building a strong partnership between CSU and the Legislature. While we will miss Chancellor White very much, I know my Senate colleagues are as excited as I am about getting to work with Dr. Castro as he steps into this crucial role.”
