Senate Leader Atkins Commends Launch of CA Notify, Urges Californians to Adhere to COVID-19 Safety Guidelines

December 7, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement today regarding the state’s COVID-19 efforts and the statewide implementation of a new exposure notification app developed in partnership with UC San Diego Health:

“California continues to deploy a multi-pronged response to the pandemic, and I am pleased that those efforts now include the statewide implementation of a groundbreaking exposure notification app developed by the Governor’s Office, UC San Diego Health, the California Department of Public Health, and the California Department of Technology. This voluntary, free, and secure mobile app will elevate the state’s ability to rapidly alert people who may have been exposed to the virus, giving them the opportunity to get tested and avoid potentially exposing others until they are certain they have a clean bill of health. The CA Notify app will help slow the surge of COVID-19, thereby protecting our health care systems from being overwhelmed.

Rising COVID-19 cases and dropping Intensive Care Unit capacities are the canaries in the coal mine that we cannot afford to tune out. We are being called upon to reimagine our holiday traditions and find creative ways to safely honor the spirit of this season. By uniting in a shared commitment to the necessary public health guidelines, we can turn the numbers around and save lives. The holiday season is synonymous with hope, and this year, hope comes in the form of our dedicated frontline workers, forthcoming vaccines, and, now, the CA Notify app.”
