Senate Leader Atkins Praises Governor Newsom Signing Historic Climate Action Bills

September 23, 2021

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released a statement today following Governor Gavin Newsom signing 2021-2022 state budget trailer bills, including several that make historic investments in California’s climate resiliency efforts:

“This year’s budget embodies California’s commitment to lead in the effort in climate policy and represents the largest climate action ever taken by our state. Over the past few years, California has faced record heat, devastating wildfires, and pervasive drought conditions. Put simply, we can’t afford to not take bold action, which is why we are investing more than $15 billion in California’s climate future. From improving forest health to bolstering drought resistance measures, this funding will directly help our communities facing the unyielding impacts of climate change and all those who live here. I’m grateful to Governor Newsom for his partnership in these efforts, and to our Senate Budget Committee Chair Nancy Skinner, our budget subcommittee chairs, and our colleagues in the Assembly for their leadership on these efforts. What we have accomplished this year is historic and bold, and will serve as a firm foundation for California’s future climate resiliency efforts. I look forward to continuing this meaningful work.”
