Senate Leader Atkins Responds to State of the State Address

March 8, 2022

SACRAMENTO – Following Governor Gavin Newsom’s 2022 State of the State address, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement:

"California is emerging from a difficult two years that have tested us in many ways. Families have been rocked physically, emotionally, and financially. Small businesses have experienced strain, students have had to adapt, and front line workers have shouldered a heavy workload. One thing that has not been tested is our resolve to lift one another up, to see the light through the fog. Our shared resolve to support families, business owners, health professionals, and essential workers as pandemic restrictions are lifted and a path forward becomes clear. Our resolve to help those without shelter find a home, to help more families pursue the California dream, to lead by example on climate change, and to put our wealth to work for all Californians. That is, as Governor Newsom deftly termed it, The California Way.

Tonight, as we face great uncertainty, we are reminded that hope is not lost—help continues to be on the way. Together, the Governor, Speaker Rendon, our Legislative colleagues, and I remain determined to finding ways to provide substantial relief and equitable support for all California families. We remain committed to leading The California Way, together."
