Legislative Leaders Propose Meaningful Tax Relief for Californians in Light of Soaring Fuel Costs

March 9, 2022

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) issued the following statement on implementing meaningful tax relief for Californians:

Pro Tem Atkins and Speaker Rendon:

“Californians are rightfully upset at the skyrocketing cost of fuel. The Legislature will put the state’s robust revenue growth to work by returning substantial tax relief to families and small businesses as fast as possible. Gas, food, and other prices are up, so our focus cannot be a small cut to the gas tax that might not get passed on to consumers. Instead, the Legislature will seek tax relief from the General Fund. This can avoid taking critical funds away from road repair and improvement, while fully protecting Proposition 98 funding for schools. More details will be developed as the state’s revenue picture becomes clearer. In the meantime, every Californian should know this: the Legislature is actively working on a solution to provide substantial relief for you and your family.”
