Senate Leader Atkins Issues Statement on Rent Relief Legislation

March 31, 2022

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement regarding AB 2179, rent relief legislation that was passed by the Senate and signed into law by Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis today:

“AB 2179 protects eligible renters who signed up for relief funds before the March 31 deadline. While we know there are many ongoing issues regarding rent, tenants, landlords, and localities, we made a commitment to act on behalf of those who were in line for this relief, and that’s why AB 2179 passed so quickly with such strong support. It was inspiring to see this bill signed by Lt. Governor Kounalakis, apparently the first time a woman has signed a bill into state law in California. That is overdue, of course, but it’s very appropriate to happen this week, when we remember California’s longtime Secretary of State, March Fong Eu, who would have turned 100 this week and was the first woman to serve as acting Governor back in 1976.”
