Senator Atkins’ Statement on SCOTUS Mifepristone Decision

June 13, 2024

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Emeritus Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement on the Supreme Court decision issued today on medication abortion:

“Today’s Supreme Court opinion on mifepristone is a tremendous relief but it does not change the fact that millions of women across our country have had the right to choose stripped from them by draconian abortion restrictions and bans. Continued access to medication abortion in pro-choice states is the bare minimum and this opinion will not deter anti-abortion extremists, it just forces them to change their plan of attack. If this case taught us anything, it’s that blocking access to scientifically-proven, safe medications and medical procedures is a priority for the anti-abortion movement and they will continue to pursue putting women and their families in danger—because that is what is at stake, lifesaving healthcare services.

In California, we remain committed to helping women and families access healthcare, even if they need to travel here from other states to get it. And we will do everything we can to preserve this basic human right.”
