Dear Neighbor,
For so many hard-working families, the impacts of COVID-19 have caused financial hardships that no one could have imagined.
As this year's tax deadline approaches, I want to remind you of tax credits that could help result in much needed money back in your pocket.
The California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), California Young Child Tax Credit, federal EITC and federal Child Tax Credit may reduce the amount of taxes you owe or increase your refund.
One of my proudest achievements when I was Speaker of the Assembly was the creation of the CalEITC. And since then, the legislature and Governor have continued to expand this program so that more and more of California's working families can benefit. CalEITC has been so successful because it not only helps Californians, but helps our economy as well in that the funds typically wind up being used for essential goods and services.
This year, CalEITC has been further expanded by the Golden State Stimulus package, which includes a $600 one-time payment for those who qualify for CalEITC, as well as those who file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
In our district, San Diego City College has launched a new initiative to expand free tax preparation services to low-income veterans in San Diego. This is a collaborative effort with Home Start and made possible with support from Citi.
Home Start and 211 San Diego also can assist San Diegans in completing tax needs online. You can make your virtual appointment by visiting myfreetaxes.org online.
This year has been so hard, and more than ever, every dollar counts. I support and advocate for these tax credits because I know that this is the kind of financial relief that will make a critical difference for families.
To see if you qualify for these credits or other benefits, and to find free tax prep help near you, go to CalEITC4me.org. Please know that you may be eligible to claim tax credits from your 2017 tax return
This is money that is desperately needed during these difficult times. It's important to me that these refunds aren't being left on the table. Feel free to call my district office for help at (619) 645-3133.
Sincerely,
Toni Atkins
Senator, 39th District
