Senator Atkins Issues Statement on Passage of the California Clean Air Initiative

September 15, 2017

Senator Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement on the Senate’s passage today of two budget bills collectively known as the California Clean Air Initiative:

“Today, California took steps that fulfill the promise of our innovative cap-and-trade program, bolster our fight against climate change, improve quality of life in our communities and help create a better future for generations to come. These measures will have significant, positive impacts throughout the state, and particularly in San Diego County.

“For example, the Clean Air Initiative includes $140 million to improve air quality around our freight hubs and ports and another $140 million for clean-vehicle rebates to further improve air quality. It includes nearly $295 million for fire prevention and firefighting, which will help save lives and property in vulnerable areas such as San Diego County’s backcountry, which has been repeatedly devastated by wildfires. It puts $15 million toward restoring our wetlands, such as around San Diego’s bays, to improve habitat for wildlife and migratory birds. And another $6 million will help make it easier for financially struggling families to enjoy our coasts.

“This year, the Legislature has taken steps to move California forward, investing in our residents and addressing our most challenging problems. This funding is the latest example of how we are striving to make California the best place in America to live, work and raise a family.”
