Senate Leader Atkins and Budget Chair Mitchell React to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Budget Proposals

January 10, 2019

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) and Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee Chair Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom’s proposed budget:

“Senate Democrats are encouraged to see thoughtful, progressive initiatives in Governor Newsom’s proposed budget that can make a difference in the lives of Californians.

“We are pleased that the Governor shares our commitment to investing in early childhood and higher education, affordable housing, alleviating poverty and homelessness, expanding access to health care, paid family leave and the Earned Income Tax Credit, and overhauling California’s emergency preparedness.

“Over the coming months, the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee will work closely with Governor Newsom and our Assembly counterparts to craft a responsible budget that can withstand the next economic downturn while making prudent investments to strengthen families and build for our future.

“Finally, on a personal and minor note, we want to congratulate the father of four children, including spunky 2-year-old Dutch, on an outstanding first budget proposal, and we hope that eight years serving as President of a Senate that is committed to mindful, responsible state budgets helped inspire him in this important effort.”
