Senate Committee Confirms Mary Salas Appointment to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors
SACRAMENTO – Today the Senate Rules Committee, chaired by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), voted to confirm the Governor’s appointment of Mary Salas to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. Her appointment now moves to the full Senate for final confirmation.
“I have had the honor of knowing and working with Mary Salas for over two decades. She is a dedicated public servant and passionate supporter of California’s Community Colleges,” Pro Tem Atkins said. “The Board of Governors will benefit from her thorough understanding of government and its role in the connection between community colleges and the communities they serve.”
Mary Salas was the first Latina to serve as Mayor of the City of Chula Vista, a position she held from 2014 to 2022, and was on the City Council from 1996 to 2004 and again from 2012 to 2014. She served as a California State Assemblymember from 2006 to 2010.
“Mary Salas has been a tireless champion for her community throughout her lifetime of public service,” said Senator Steve Padilla (D-San Diego). “Her dedication and her lived experience make her uniquely qualified to guide and shape the policies of California’s world-class community college system.”
Mary Salas was a Corporate Communications Coordinator for Community Health Group from 2001 to 2004 and an Economic Development Specialist at the California Trade and Commerce Agency from 1994 to 2001. She currently serves on the Chula Vista Police Foundation Board of Directors, MANA de San Diego, and the San Diego Airport Authority Board of Directors.
