STATEMENT - Senate Leader Atkins Condemns Trump Administration’s Threat to Impose Tariffs on Mexican Imports

June 7, 2019

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement highlighting the negative consequences of imposing tariffs on Mexican imports:

“The issues of refugee migration and international trade are complex and separate – and they should be treated as such. Linking them by imposing tariffs will unnecessarily raise prices for our families, harm our farmers and small businesses and likely do serious damage to the economies of the United States, California, our binational mega-region, and my home city of San Diego – all in a misguided attempt to gain political leverage over Mexico, a valued neighbor, partner and ally. California imports more than $18 billion worth of goods from Mexico, and trade between us creates 566,000 California jobs. The supply chain is worth $2.5 billion to San Diego. The stakes are too high, and I stand with all those urging the president to abandon this terrible threat.”
