California Senate to Examine Power Shutoffs, Develop Action Plan as Part of Nov. 18 Hearing

November 1, 2019

SACRAMENTO –Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s announcement today regarding wildfires, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), and public safety power shutoffs:

“PG&E has failed the public’s expectation of the delivery of power to the millions of customers it serves. I share the Governor’s urgency to resolve the utility’s bankruptcy quickly and better position our State so that power shutoffs do not become the new way of life for Californians. The Senate will begin its dive into evaluating power shutoffs and develop a plan of action as part of the oversight hearing on November 18. The safety and needs of our residents are our top priorities, and will remain so as we work on these issues during the hearing and our current legislative session that reconvenes in January.”
