Senate Leader Atkins Issues Statement on Supreme Court Appointment

October 26, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement regarding the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court:

“This rushed appointment is a sham and a shame. I am disgusted by the Republican Senators who once again fell in line with Donald Trump and forced through his appointment of Judge Amy Coney Barrett. Millions of Americans need the Senate to step up NOW and pass a new COVID-19 stimulus bill to keep businesses open and keep people in their homes. Instead, they pushed through a lifetime appointment for someone they clearly hope will repeal the Affordable Care Act, repeal Roe v. Wade, and repeal marriage equality. Like others who have spent their lives working to uphold equality for all—including women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and racial, social and economic justice—I am offended by this confirmation, and it has reaffirmed my commitment to keep up the good fight.”
