Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins Announces Senate Rules Committee Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Today, the Senate Rules Committee, chaired by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), voted to approve three new appointments.

  • Senator Anthony Portantino was appointed to the Seismic Safety Commission. Senator Anthony Portantino has represented the 25th California State Senate District since 2016. He served as a member of the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2012 and on the La Cañada Flintridge City Council from 1999 until 2006. Senator Portantino lives in La Cañada Flintridge and he is filling the remainder of a term ending in 2023. No compensation.
  • Greg Knoll was appointed to the State Bar Board of Trustees.  Greg Knoll is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Counsel for the Legal Aid Society of San Diego. He is also the Founder and Coordinator of Health Consumer Alliance. Mr. Knoll is a member of the San Diego County Bar Association, the Lawyers Club of San Diego, and the State Bar of California.  Previously, he served as a Senate President pro Tempore appointee to the California Healthcare Workforce Policy Commission from 2019 to 2021. Mr. Knoll lives in Escondido and the term is four years. Compensation is $50 per diem, plus necessary expenses.
  • Shelley Lyford was reappointed to the California Commission on Aging. Shelley Lyford was appointed to the California Commission on Aging in 2019. She is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Gary and Mary West Foundation and West Health. Ms. Lyford currently serves on the boards for the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation and Civica Rx. Previously, she served on the board for the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Lyford lives in Encinitas and the term is three years. Compensation is necessary expenses.
