Senate Leader Atkins' Statement on SCOTUS Mifepristone Decision
SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement on the Supreme Court decision to allow access to mifepristone while the legal battle over FDA approval of the abortion pill continues:
“Given the terrible ruling by the Supreme Court on Dobbs, which eliminated nearly 50 years of abortion access under Roe v. Wade, it is encouraging that the Court has decided to leave access to a key abortion medication unchanged while the legal challenges to its FDA approval continues. I am hopeful that science will prevail, and a drug that has been used safely and effectively in the U.S. for more than 22 years will continue to be available nationwide. Today’s decision is a step in the right direction, but not a sign to become complacent, and that’s why California is taking action to prepare, just as we did before Dobbs. Reproductive rights remain under attack, and we must – and will – continue the fight to protect them and access to abortion care at all costs.”
