Women's History month is a time to honor the contributions, achievements and the resilience of women throughout history. It recognizes the often-overlooked impact women have in shaping societies, advancing human rights and breaking barriers. As a proud member of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, we host a special ceremony in Sacramento to acknowledge remarkable women from across the State of California. I am pleased to announce that my selection for the 39th Senate District’s Woman of the Year is Cara Dessert! Read more about her tremendous accomplishments below.

California State Senate District 39 Woman of the Year: Cara Dessert.

Cara Dessert is a queer Latina attorney with 20 years in social justice leadership. She is CEO of The San Diego LGBT Community Center, the largest regional service provider for LGBTQ+ people, where she grew the organization from $6.5 million to $15.5 million, expanding direct services and advocacy for the community across seven locations. Dessert led The Center in expanding its housing services to a full range housing continuum that includes the first shelter in San Diego County for LGBTQ+ youth, additional permanent supportive housing and prevention programs and services for youth, adults, and seniors, and ongoing services and advocacy for LGBTQ+ community members who are at risk of experiencing homelessness.
 
Under her leadership, The Center enhances and sustains the health and wellbeing of the LGBTQ+, immigrant, and HIV communities, serving community with undaunted courage and inspirational authenticity.
