Statement from Senator Akilah Weber Pierson on Tragic Shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego
Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D., who represents the district that includes the Clairemont community in San Diego, issued the following statement regarding the tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego:
“My heart goes out to the families and loved ones those who lost their lives at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Among the victims was Amin Abdullah, a security guard who risked his life protecting members and children inside the mosque. His courage and selflessness represent the very best of humanity.
I want to thank the San Diego Police Department and all first responders who acted quickly and decisively during this tragedy.
We must have a serious and urgent conversation in this country about gun laws, access to firearms, and the factors that can lead our youth down such a dark and violent path. We are seeing firsthand how hate becomes a malignant cancer in our society when it is allowed to grow and spread unchecked.
We also must recommit ourselves to living in peace, love, and respect with one another. The rhetoric we use matters—from the highest offices in our nation to our everyday conversations and even within our own homes. We all have a responsibility to help turn the temperature down, reject division, and choose unity over hate.
To the Clairemont community and the Muslim community at large: stay strong, continue leaning on one another, and know that love and unity will always be stronger than hate.”
