I hope you’re doing well and that your month is starting off on a positive note. It’s a privilege to serve our community in the California State Senate.
Sacramento, CA — Today, Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D. (D-San Diego), joined by the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, rallied at the California State Capitol today in support of Senate Bill 869, legislation that would require restaurant menus to clearly label beverages containing more than 50 percent of the recommended daily value for added sugar.
State Senator Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson says Senate Bill 869 is meant to raise awareness of just how much sugar can be found in beverages, which can sometimes exceed the recommended allowance by over triple.
Senate Bill (SB) 1067, introduced in February by Sen. Akilah Weber-Pierson (D-San Diego), seeks to close California’s racial achievement gap in education by requiring universal screening and early identification of math difficulties for students in kindergarten through second grade.
As we welcome a new month, I hope you and your family are doing well. Serving you in the California State Senate is a privilege I deeply value, and I remain dedicated to hearing your concerns, championing your priorities, and delivering meaningful results. Whether at the Capitol or here in the district, my team and I work each day to ensure your voices guide the decisions that shape our communities.
That’s why a new effort to upgrade math skills via legislation is — or at least should be — high on the Capitol’s must-do list. State Sen. Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson, a San Diego Democrat, introduced Senate Bill 1067, backed by education reformers who supported the phonics bill.
Senator Akilah Weber Pierson's SB 1067 would require districts to adopt one or more state-approved screening instruments by July 2027 and use them to determine students' math challenges starting in 2028-29.
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well. It is an honor to serve you in the California State Senate, and I remain committed to listening to your concerns, advocating for your priorities, and delivering results that strengthen our communities.
