Upcoming REAL ID Deadline - May 7, 2025

Dear neighbor,

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin enforcing REAL ID requirements on May 7, 2025.

A REAL ID or other compliant ID, such as a passport, will be required to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities that require identification. Secure facilities can include federal courthouses and military bases, according to the CA Department of Motor Vehicles.

Need to Apply for a REAL ID?

The REAL ID Application can be started online, but will require you to visit the DMV. You must provide proof of identity, proof of California residency, and provide your Social Security number on your REAL ID application.

Individuals can determine if they have a California-issued REAL ID by looking for a gold bear and star in the upper right hand corner on their identification card.

Already have a REAL ID?

If you already have a REAL ID driver’s license or ID, then you can renew it online, unless you need to change your address, personal description, or if you are renewing a commercial driver’s license.

For additional information, check out the resources below or visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov.

Additional Resources

I would like to urge anyone who has not yet obtained a California issued REAL ID to make completing an application a priority. Those without an acceptable form of identification can expect to face delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being permitted entry.
