Governor Newsom Signs Senator Weber Pierson’s SB 1067 to Strengthen Early Math Support for California Students
SACRAMENTO, CA — Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bill 1067, authored by Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D. (D-San Diego), into law. SB 1067 helps California identify students who are struggling with math earlier and connect them with the support they need to succeed.
SB 1067 establishes annual math assessments for students in kindergarten through second grade, helping educators identify learning challenges before they become larger academic gaps. Students identified as needing additional support will receive evidence-based interventions designed to help them get back on track and build the foundational skills they need for long-term success.
“Too often, we wait until a child is already struggling before we step in to help,” said Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D. “SB 1067 is about changing that. By assessing students early, we can identify where they need support and make sure they receive the right help at the right time. Every child deserves the opportunity to build a strong foundation in math, and this law gives educators and families another important tool to help make that possible.”
This new law reflects Senator Weber Pierson’s focus on early intervention and improving outcomes for California’s youngest learners. Rather than waiting for students to fall significantly behind, SB 1067 gives schools an opportunity to identify challenges early and respond with targeted, evidence-based support.
