SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement today regarding the announced retirement of California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye:

“Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye is a dynamic and thoughtful leader who has steered the California Supreme Court with a steady hand during tumultuous times. She has been instrumental in maintaining a collaborative relationship between our co-equal branches, and pursuing our shared commitment to improve access to justice. Justice Cantil-Sakauye has upheld and reflected California’s values, all the while demonstrating that justice can be achieved free of politics. On a personal level, I will miss working alongside her and will always cherish the memory of her swearing me in as President pro Tempore of the Senate. On behalf of all Californians, I thank Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye for dedicating more than 30 years to our state’s justice system, and wish her all the best in her retirement.”
