Atkins Statement on Governor Signing Senate’s Ambitious Climate Package

September 16, 2022

SACRAMENTO — Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today released the following statement on Governor Newsom signing legislation included in the Senate Democrat’s 2022 Climate Package:

“The comprehensive climate package advanced by Senate Democrats moves California a giant leap forward in fighting climate change:  setting firm goals to reduce carbon emissions and increase renewable energy, and providing the tools to meet those goals; recognizing the lopsided impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, and providing equitable relief, funding badly-needed infrastructure programs and creating good-paying union jobs,” Pro Tem Atkins said. “By signing the bills in the Senate Climate Package, Governor Newsom has ensured California’s national leadership on climate change now and for the future.”

Bills in the Senate package that have been signed include SB 1020, the Clean Energy, Jobs, and Affordability Act of 2022 authored by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), Senator John Laird (D-Santa Cruz), Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced), and Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles), as well as SB 887 (Becker), SB 1145 (Laird), SB 1158 (Becker), SB 1174 (Hertzberg), SB 1203 (Becker), SB 1230 (Limon), SB 1251 (Gonzalez), and SB 1382 (Gonzalez).

The Senate Climate Workgroup was chaired by Senator Laird and consisted of Senators Ben Allen, Josh Becker, Anna Caballero, Maria Elena Durazo, Lena Gonzalez, Bob Hertzberg, Sydney Kamlager, Monique Limon, Mike McGuire, Henry Stern, and Bob Wieckowski.
