Governor Newsom Signs Senate Leader Atkins’ Critical Reproductive Access Legislation

September 27, 2022

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement following Governor Gavin Newsom signing into law SB 1375, which would allow qualified nurse practitioners to provide first trimester abortions without the supervision of a physician:

“Abortion is healthcare—timely, essential healthcare that patients should not have to scramble to secure. Enabling qualified nurse practitioners to provide first trimester abortions without doctor supervision is a major step forward in expanding access to quality, affordable reproductive health care statewide and is critical given the physician shortage. I want to thank Governor Newsom for signing this legislation, as well as my principal co-author Assemblymember Jim Wood; my colleagues in the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, including Caucus Chair Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, who managed the bill in the Assembly; the California Association of Nurse Practitioners; and the California Future of Abortion Council for their continued partnership. SB 1375 is one of over a dozen bills that the California Legislative Women’s Caucus sent to the Governor to protect and expand access to reproductive services for Californians and all who come here seeking medical care.”
